Dear Helen: I'm Feeling Isolated at a New School

Dear Helen,

I’m in my third year of teaching and recently moved to a new school for a shorter commute and a fresh start. But instead of feeling excited, I feel completely lost—like I’m starting from scratch.

Everything is done differently, and while some changes are good, most are making me question why I ever left my old school. I don’t feel supported, and the isolation is overwhelming.

I know people say it gets easier with time, but right now, I’m struggling to see how. For the first time, I just want to give up. How do I push through this? Will it really get better?

Dear Feeling Alone & Overwhelmed,

Changing schools is never easy, and it's completely normal to feel overwhelmed at first. Here are some suggestions that might help:

Embrace the Positive Changes:

Adapt to the changes you agree with and incorporate them into your teaching practice to enhance your skills. For the differences you may not agree with, try to understand their benefits. When in your classroom, align with the school’s practices and policies but also be the teacher you want to be, experiment with your ideas and enjoy building relationships with your students.

Once you feel secure in your new role, consider offering your innovative and respectful suggestions to your school leadership team. Your ideas could lead to positive changes!

Seek Support:

As a relatively new teacher, it's important to seek support. Talk to your leadership team about finding a mentor or teaching buddy who can help you navigate your new environment. Building collegial relationships and friendships with supportive teachers can make a big difference.

Stay Positive and Persistent:

Changing schools for a fresh start is a courageous move. Remind yourself why you love teaching and why you wanted a change.

Don’t give up!
