About this course

Through the activities in this course teachers learn how to ignite student curiosity, encourage questions and help students examine different perspectives.

Speaking and listening are integral in the teaching of literacy and knowing how to build these skills while making connections with other language skills such as reading and writing is essential. The strategies presented are well explained and easy to transfer into different classroom contexts. Both casual and permanent teachers will benefit from the knowledge gained in this course.

You will learn:

  • Develop an understanding of the importance of oral language in the K-2 Classroom
  • Learn engaging and effective teaching strategies to develop students’ oral language skills and build their ability to verbally express themselves confidently across a range of topics and subject areas
  • Gain knowledge and understanding in teaching oral language skills in literacy learning sequences, and connecting with other language skills such as reading and writing, to create rich classroom experiences for students

About the presenter

Helen has been teaching for over twelve years in both government and independent schools across all stages from K-6. She is passionate about helping students develop their literacy skills through building oral language and the ability to verbally express their thoughts and opinions articulately and with increasing detail. Helen is experienced in coaching students in public speaking and debating, and has worked with teachers on the effective implementation of the latest NSW English Syllabus.
