About this course

Ideas to Spark Narrative Writing is a practical and inspiring course designed to help primary school teachers unlock their students’ creative potential. Participants will explore a rich repertoire of techniques—including visual stimuli and writing prompts—to support imaginative idea generation. The course also focuses on strategies that help students organise and develop their thoughts before writing, reducing cognitive overload and building confidence from the very first sentence. With a strong emphasis on scaffolding and differentiation, teachers will learn how to tailor support to meet the diverse needs of their learners, ensuring every child feels equipped and empowered to write. 

You will:

  • Build a repertoire of techniques such as the use of images and writing prompts to support students generate a range of ideas when writing imaginatively 
  • Learn strategies to help students develop their ideas more coherently before they start writing, reducing cognitive overload and providing them with the confidence and expertise to start the writing process  
  • Understand how to provide adequate scaffolding and to differentiate to support all learners in developing ideas to write about
