About this course

This foundational course explores the power of Essential Agreements in shaping positive, high-functioning classroom cultures. Developed by The Culture Collective, the session highlights how intentional, shared agreements can create safer, healthier learning environments for students and staff alike.

You will gain practical insights into what Essential Agreements are, the theory that underpins them, and why they play such a critical role in building strong classroom culture. You'll also learn how to thoughtfully prepare for and co-construct agreements with your students, clarifying purpose, defining shared values, and identifying the behaviours that bring those values to life.

Leave equipped with clear, actionable strategies to embed Essential Agreements effectively, strengthen relationships, and foster classrooms where every student feels safe, respected and ready to learn.

You will:

  • Understand what an essential agreement is, the theory behind essential agreements and their importance, and how to embed effectively into the classroom
  • Learn what to consider in the pre-construction of an essential agreement for a particular cohort of students and how to then co-construct with students, defining the agreement’s purpose and the values and behaviours that should be promoted
  • Understand how an effective essential agreement can transform the culture and environment in the classroom as well as build positive relationships
