NSW Teachers: This Course Counts Towards Your PD Hours

This course was published after the August 2024 NESA changes and as a result, does not carry NESA accreditation. From now on, all professional development activities, whether previously accredited or not, now count towards your required PD hours.Rest assured, this course maintains the same high standards as all ClassCover Learn courses. While NESA is no longer accrediting new PD courses, the flexibility of the new framework means you can explore more topics that interest you and still meet your accreditation requirements. Learn more

About this course

This course explores the concept of masking in neurodivergent students—what it is, why it occurs, and why it should not be mistaken for success. Educators will learn to identify subtle signs of masking, especially when students appear to be coping well on the surface.

The course encourages a shift from interpreting behaviour at face value to understanding the underlying needs related to regulation, safety, and connection. Participants will be equipped with practical, everyday strategies to foster emotionally safe and authentic classroom environments where all students feel seen and supported. Special attention is given to differentiation practices that are respectful and empowering, particularly for students with PDA, ADHD, and autism.

By the end of the course, educators will be better prepared to create inclusive spaces that reduce the need for masking and promote genuine engagement, wellbeing, and learning for every student.

You will:

  • Understand what masking is, why it happens, and why it’s not a sign of success.
  • Learn to notice red flags that a child is masking, especially when things “look fine.”
  • Shift their thinking from surface behaviour to root causes (regulation, safety, connection).
  • Be equipped with everyday classroom practices that create safer, more authentic spaces for all brains.
  • Understand how to differentiate without shame or fear,  especially for PDA, ADHD, and autistic students.
