In this immersive course from Poetry in Action’s Associate Director and Head of Education,
Erica Lovell, you’ll learn how bringing a piece of text to life in the classroom is a great way to engage your classroom and boost literary understanding. Using dramatic interpretations of poetry as an example, this course provides strategies you can use to help students analyse texts on a deeper level, and how the use of voice and movement can help boost understanding. You’ll walk away with a range of helpful strategies to help boost student engagement in their learning. 

You will:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the importance of using voice and movement to bring a text, such as poetry, to life in the classroom
  • Learn strategies to assist students analyse more complex texts on a deeper level; interpret meaning and justify their thinking with evidence
  • Provide greater opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding of a text in their unique way, boosting student engagement in their learning
  • Be able to incorporate a greater range of techniques and activities for students to understand characterisation; what drives a character and how the author wants their characters to be perceived by the audience

Erica Lovell is the Associate Director and Head of Education at Poetry in Action. With an extensive background as both a Theatre Director and Drama Teacher, and holding a Masters of Secondary Education, Erica is perfectly placed to deliver this course. When she's not helping students tell their stories through the performing arts, you can find Erica on stage as an actor.
